Movie Review: Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)

Mission Impossible:  Fallout was a fun movie.  I enjoyed seeing it.

That’s it.  That’s all I’ve got.

I simply don’t feel like picking apart another action movie because it was, well, an action movie.  Handsome people saying they’re lines smartly; nice suits and dresses;  great action scenes, well choreographed and filmed.  I’m not going to go into the impossibility of the stunts without the benefit of super powers, or the telegraphed plot that was ridiculously easy to follow for an espionage film “full of twists and turns”.  The only real twist happened to Tom Cruise’s ankle during one of his stunts.  So many people can’t stand Tom Cruise, and I’m not really sure I understand why.  Some complain about the time he jumped on a couch on the Oprah show, or that he’s a scientologist.  He’s never been arrested for drinking and driving, never any drug problems, doesn’t steal, hasn’t been attacked by #metoo yet.  He’s a solid actor who makes solid movies.  Beyond that, what else matters?

The movie was really good, a great afternoon distraction.  Nothing in it will surprise you, or change your life, and make you stop and smell the roses.  But you’ll be happy you saw it…and it definitely needs to be seen on a big screen.

To be honest, I don’t usually like action flicks, not counting super hero movies because they are special to me.  Too often they force me out of my “suspension of disbelief” because of “wait, that doesn’t make any sense” or “why did they split up?”, or “oh, come on, that couldn’t happen”.  I sat through the first Transformers movie.  I still have scars.  I believe Jerry Bruckheimer should be brought up on some kind of charges for indecency.  I was looking over his filmography to find a movie of his I liked, and it took a while.  I enjoyed the original CSI series, and Top Gun (although this might be due to the soft core gay porn volley ball scene, I’m not totally sure), and I liked the first Pirates of the Caribbean.  But good lord, stop already.

So, I’m going to leave this on a positive note and list some of my favorite action movies.  They are in no particular order, just listed as they popped into my head, and I’m going to leave out super hero movies because I’m a massive geek who got a boner during the airport fight scene in Captain America:  Civil War, so just assume any and all comic book movies get a thumbs up in my book…even the new DC ones because I still go and see them knowing they will suck.

*I’m leaving out, for the most part, sci-fi and horror, since, to me, there is a clear       difference between them…that will be another list!

Raiders of the Lost Ark (and it’s sequels, even the last one)

The Terminator (1 and 2)

The Professional

Gladiator (my friend James’ favorite film!)

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The Mummy and The Mummy Returns (Brandon Frasier)

Time Bandits (it’s an action movie, right?)

Bonnie and Clyde

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

House of Flying Daggers

Smokey and the Bandit

Lethal Weapon

Pulp Fiction

Collateral

First Blood (also a really good book!)

The Departed

True Grit (2010) (just a really beautiful movie)

The Bourne Identity

Goodfellas

Django Unchained

Most of the bond movies

What do you think?  Let me know!

Thanks for reading!
