Greetings and salutations!

Welcome to the Purple Dragon Prose blog!

(How exciting!)

Hello and thank you for checking out my new blog.  As I stated in my short bio, I’m a middle aged (5o in less than a year!), chubby, bald gay guy who got sick and tired of working for corporate America and decided to chase my dream of becoming a writer.  Actually, to be honest, my dream was to become a PAID writer, but this will do for now.  I’m a huge fan of all things entertainment:  Books, movies, TV, music, comics (proud geek here), and pretty much any kind of art.  I studied fine art for a little while, and some writing, and business, but I never got a degree.  Instead, I focused on working in retail management for over 30 years, mostly bookstores and record stores, but also furniture and gifts.  The last 10 years I spent working several different jobs for a huge bank, starting as a licensed banker and ending as an underpaid operations “manager”.  I’ve met some amazing people along the way, including my better half of over 25 years, Tommy (don’t ask either of us exactly how long we’ve been together, we don’t know…we’re two guys so there is no one to remember the anniversary-oh well, one less gift to buy).

The purpose of this blog is…no real purpose.  It’s just a place for me to post my essays about my life, politics (proud member of the Freedom Party-if you don’t know what that is, don’t worry-I made it up…a post will follow explaining soon…), movie reviews, and whatever else I feel like writing. Please feel free to leave any comment you would like, good or bad.  I have a pretty strong self image and ego, so I’ll most likely accept any praise and completely ignore any anonymous, online trolls saying nasty things-good luck trying to offend me, many have tried, all have failed!  Disagree with something I say?  I’m a big gurl, so let me know why I’m wrong.  I am a firm believer that I can’t grow as a person if I only spend time with people who agree with everything I say.

That being said, a little more about me.  As I mentioned, my partner and I have been together for decades, sharing a home since 2000.  We currently have two dogs and two cats, having lost Jackson, our 16 year old Italian Grayhound in 2016, and Stanley, a not quite 8 year old furry, pit bull-terrier-something mix 6 months later the day after Christmas (he had been sick with a terminal illness for years and died in our arms).  I still miss them both terribly.  We both love to cook, and we both love to drink.  I might love drinking a little more, after all, I wanted to become a writer because you’re pretty much supposed to be a drunk as you sit, hacking away at the keyboard for endless hours.  I’ve been training most of my life for that.

I love to read and will read pretty much anything-fiction, non-fiction, doesn’t matter as long as the writing is strong and they have a story to tell.  As of today, my favorite books include The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, The World According to Garp by John Irving, The Color Purple by Alice Walker (also my favorite film and one of my favorite musicals), and Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris (I grew up with a stutter and a decade of speech therapy so I related to that one A LOT).  Favorite films?  Well, the aforementioned The Color Purple, also All About Eve, The Women (NOT the remake), almost anything Universal Monster, Marvel Cinematic Universe (did I mention I was a geek?), The Bridges of Madison County, most Humphrey Bogart movies, Ed Wood, On Golden Pond, and…I have to stop, I could go on for pages and pages.  If you like my reviews and want me to watch a favorite of yours, let me know!  Favorite music-George Michael, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Andrew Combs, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Koko Taylor, Linda Eder, Wynonna, Sheena Easton, Morgan James-I’m a big fan of singer-songwriters, I can’t get enough of a great lyric.  TV shows…ahhh…here comes the gay!  The Golden Girls has topped my list since the 80’s, and it will probably never leave.  Will and Grace, American Horror Story, Sordid Lives, Ru Paul’s Drag Race (it’s the most fun thing you can watch on TV), Master Ink, Perry Mason, I Love Lucy, The Andy Griffith Show, Grace and Frankie, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Good Times.

Well, that’s enough about me.  Please feel free to tell me about yourselves in the comments.  Peoples life stories are always amazing, no matter what you might think or what people might tell you, everyone has a story to tell.  I hope you enjoy mine.

Thanks for reading,

Steven
